![]() ![]() The company's $31b "advertising" program is really a payola scheme that pits sellers against each other, forcing them to bid on the chance to be at the top of your search. Today, Marketplace sellers are handing 45%+ of the sale price to Amazon in junk fees. That's when Amazon started to harvest the surplus from its business customers and send it to Amazon's shareholders. This strategy meant that it became progressively harder for shoppers to find things anywhere except Amazon, which meant that they only searched on Amazon, which meant that sellers had to sell on Amazon. Marketplace sellers reached huge audiences and Amazon took low commissions from them. Kindle and Audible creators got generous packages. As these sellers piled in, Amazon shifted to subsidizing suppliers. That tempted in lots of business customers – Marketplace sellers who turned Amazon into the "everything store" it had promised from the beginning. Prime customers start their shopping on Amazon, and 90% of the time, they don't search anywhere else. And Amazon sold us Prime, getting us to pre-pay for a year's worth of shipping. Amazon sold us ebooks and audiobooks that were permanently locked to its platform with DRM, so that every dollar we spent on media was a dollar we'd have to give up if we deleted Amazon and its apps. Lots of us piled in, and lots of brick-and-mortar retailers withered and died, making it hard to go elsewhere. This was a hell of a good deal for Amazon's customers. If you searched for a product, Amazon tried its damndest to put it at the top of the search results. It sold goods below cost and shipped them below cost. Think of Amazon: for many years, it operated at a loss, using its access to the capital markets to subsidize everything you bought. When a platform starts, it needs users, so it makes itself valuable to users. I call this enshittification, and it is a seemingly inevitable consequence arising from the combination of the ease of changing how a platform allocates value, combined with the nature of a "two sided market," where a platform sits between buyers and sellers, holding each hostage to the other, raking off an ever-larger share of the value that passes between them. Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. The game is based on the streets of Atlantic City, N.J., and has sold more than 275?million units worldwide. Monopoly’s iconic tokens originated when the niece of game creator Charles Darrow suggested using charms from her charm bracelet for tokens. The initiative was intended to ensure that a game created almost eight decades ago remains relevant to fans. The online contest to change the tokens was sparked by chatter on Facebook, where Monopoly has more than 10 million fans. “I think there were a lot of cat lovers in the world who reached out and voted for the cat to be the new token for Monopoly,” said Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president for Hasbro game marketing. ![]() Other pieces that competed for a spot on Monopoly included a robot, diamond ring, helicopter and guitar. The pieces identify the players and have changed quite a bit since Parker Brothers bought the game from its original designer in 1935. The vote on Facebook closed just before midnight Tuesday, marking the first time that fans had had a say on which token to add and which to toss. The shoe, wheelbarrow and iron were neck and neck in the final hours of voting. The Scottie dog has a new nemesis in Monopoly, with fans voting in an online contest to add a cat token to the property-trading game and drop the iron, toy-maker Hasbro announced yesterday.

In this mode, the emitter and collector regions switch roles. Reverse-active mode: By reversing the biasing conditions of the forward-active region, a bipolar transistor goes into reverse-active mode. This mode offers the greatest amount of current gain. If this is the case, the collector-emitter current is approximately proportional to the base current, but many times larger, for small base current variations. The CB junction is reverse-biased prevening movement of majority carriers from collector to base, but the carriers from the emitter break the CB depletion region to reach the collector layer because of the applied electric field.Ī BJT has four distinct regions of operation depending on the biasing polarity and magnitude they are discussed below:įorward-active mode: This is the most commonly used mode of operation where the BE junction is forward biased and the CB junction is reverse biased. The Base layer is thinner and lightly doped so as to reduce the number of recombinations in the base layer, ensuring electrons/holes reach the CB junction. When forward biased the electrons (in case of NPN) and holes (in case of PNP) get thermally excited causing them to break the depletion layer and enter into the Base layer and recombine with holes or electrons depending upon the type of transistor. In a typical operation, the BE-junction is forward biased, which means that the P-type layer is at a more positive potential than the N-type layer, and the BC-junction is reverse-biased. The Emitter terminal emits charge carriers, which are electrons in the case of NPN type and holes in the case of PNP type BJT.Ĭharge flow in a BJT is due to the diffusion of charge carriers across a junction between two regions of different charge carrier concentrations. The Emitter region is highly doped while the Collector has balanced doping. The Base region is slightly doped and is thinner as compared to other regions. ![]() The PN junction that connects the base and emitter region is called the BE-junction while the junction connecting the base and collector is called the BC-junction. Two PN junction diodes are sandwiched together to form a BJT. In other words, a BJT is formed by a "sandwich" of extrinsic semiconductor materials placed back to back. Hence they are widely used as amplifiers and switches in electronic equipment such as mobile phones, industrial control, television, and radio transmitters.Ī bipolar junction transistor is created by combining two doped semiconductor materials that are back-to-back. Another important application of BJT is switching circuits. ![]() The primary function of a BJT is to amplify current, which allows BJTs to be used as amplifiers. The three terminals of the BJT are the base, the collector, and the emitter. What is a BJT?Ī Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT or BJT Transistor) is a three-terminal semiconductor device composed of two P-N junctions that can amplify or magnify a signal. In the case of a BJT, both electrons and holes could be used as charge carriers. If an N-type semiconductor is used the charge carriers are electrons while if a P-type semiconductor is used the charge carriers are holes. Unipolar transistors or Field Effect Transistors (FETs), as the name suggests use only one type of charge carrier, either electrons or holes depending on the type of semiconductor material used. With ten days remaining, he sent a note to Sutherland stating that "the painting, however masterly in execution, is not suitable" and declared that the ceremony would go ahead without it. He described it to Lord Moran as "filthy" and "malignant", and complained that it made him "look like a down-and-out drunk who has been picked out of the gutter in the Strand." Churchill also declared, "It makes me look as if I were straining a stool" (i.e. It was his first view of the work and he was deeply upset. Lady Spencer-Churchill thought it was a good resemblance – "really quite alarmingly like him" – but also said it made him look too cross, while recognising that it was a familiar expression. Sutherland was reluctant to discuss the work in progress with Churchill and showed the subject few of his working materials. The pose, with Churchill grasping the arms of his chair, recalls the statue of U.S. He brought his preliminary materials to his studio to create the final work on a large square canvas, the shape chosen to symbolize Churchill's solidity and endurance, embodied in a remark that Churchill made, "I am a rock". Additionally, Sutherland worked from photographs by Elsbeth Juda. After completing these sketches, he made some oil studies of his subject. Sutherland made preparatory charcoal sketches of Churchill at a handful of sittings at Chartwell from August 1954, concentrating on Churchill's hands and face. Churchill also wished to be depicted in his robes as a Knight of the Garter, but the commission specified that he should be shown in his usual parliamentary dress – a black morning coat, with waistcoat and striped trousers, and a spotted bow tie. Churchill had wanted to direct the composition towards a fictionalised scene but Sutherland had insisted upon a realistic portrayal, one described by Simon Schama as "No bulldog, no baby face. Sutherland and Churchill had different hopes for the painting. He was drawn to depicting subjects as they truly were without embellishment some sitters considered his disinclination to flattery as a form of cruelty or disparagement to his subjects. Sutherland had gained a reputation as a modernist painter through some recent successful portraits, such as Somerset Maugham in 1949. Background īy the time the portrait had been commissioned, Churchill was an elder statesman nearing the end of his second period as Prime Minister. Clementine Churchill learned of the deed the next morning and approved. According to this, the painting was taken by her and her brother to a secluded house and burned. For a long time it was assumed that it was destroyed by Lady Spencer-Churchill however, in the course of research for a biography of Churchill, audio recordings were sighted that attribute the destruction to Grace Hamblin, Churchill's private secretary. After its public presentation, the painting was taken to his country home at Chartwell but not displayed. įinding the depiction deeply unflattering, Churchill disliked the portrait intensely.
